The state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern

Not only the Baltic coast has many exciting and beautiful destinations, but also the Mecklenburg Lake District. With more than 200 lakes and numerous rivers you can experience a wonderful vacation. In nature you can find stunning forests, lakes which are very clean, with a view to the bottom, of a pretty blue color or with the depth at which you would need even your diving equipment. Many forests have designated hiking trails and paths on offer for a tour in the countryside. In many parts of Mecklenburg Vorpommern you can admire the plants -and animal wealth in Germany. There are close to the Hanseatic city of Anklam Otter to see in the wild, some native birds to be admired on the island of Rügen in huge shoals as Swans, geese, ducks and sometimes even cranes. In Nature Museum Waren Müritz you can see the typical birds, mammals and fish. There had to be built fences to protect the fish from the free-roaming otters, which saw a quick and convenient source of food in the fish tanks. The Mecklenburg Lake District is one of the largest lakes landscapes in Germany and looks pretty in every season. It is the result of the last ice age, when the moraines retreated and the glaciers began to melt. It formed on a 240-kilometer and 30-kilometer strip 8 lakes with more than 10 square kilometers and 12 lakes with more than 5 km² area, also known as Great Lakes country. Also dozens of lakes come over 2km² area. On the Baltic Sea coast there are cliffs of chalk, nature reserves with many species of birds and game (deer and fallow deer). In Putbus, the white city on Rügen there are even white deer, which do not always stay at the Putbuser Castle Park, but are also seen in other regions of Ruegen. In the town of Binz on the other hand, the Baltic Sea resort, rabbits are the primary species, next to humans. They are located spread on the dunes, playgrounds and other green areas throughout the city. On the Darß you can see, however many horses, forest areas and berries.

Unfortunately, no bears, which were previously available in this region. However, they were driven out or shot while hunting. Target predators are now foxes, wild dogs and maybe isolated wolves, which hide and can not be seen. Animals that are not hiding so naturally are deer and wild boar. Although there are no large mountains or big hills available in Mecklenburg Vorpommern, there are still small hills and valleys. Above all, it is but the waters, forests and fields which determine the landscape.

The regions

In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern there are most different regions and zones.

Rügen

The largest island in Germany is Rügen. It is home to spas, the chalk cliffs and the white deer in the city park of Putbus, the so-called "White City". Here you can sunbathe on the beach of the Baltic Sea and take walks along the water and the cliffs. A special restaurant here is the "Nautilus" - designed as if you were sitting in a submarine from "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The coastline has a variety of shapes and colors, whether it is a harbor of stone, a beautiful sandy beach or a forest area, there is a suitable beach for all types of people.

Usedom

On the island Usedom is the border with Poland and with 42km one of the longest beaches. In addition to the good swimming opportunities, there are also very good restaurants on Usedom.

. .

Fishland Darß / Zingst

The peninsula Darß means freely translated from the Old Slavic "draci" "thorn place" which seems to be no wonder considering the huge forest areas. On the Darß there are also many bridle paths and hiking dunes. The "Darßer Ort" lighthouse is particularly beautiful.

Mecklenburg Switzerland

The name Mecklenburg Switzerland is owed to the landscape northwest of of the Mecklenburg Lake District to its many hills, intact nature, ancient villages, castles and manor houses. Mecklenburg Switzerland consists of 19% forest and 10% water.

Mecklenburg Lake District

The 240 km long and 30 km wide Mecklenburg Lake District includes dozens of lakes, and rivers and stretches from Schwerin to Eberswalde.

Mecklenburg mainland coast

The Mecklenburg Vorpommern mainland also holds many opportunities for every kind of visitor, unless you are a mountain climber, then this land might be too flat for you. On the other hand, there are many castles and palaces, old villages and lakes as far as the eye can see. The cities of the former Hanseatic League are historic. Unfortunately, some of the splendor of past seafaring was lost but you can find traces of those times everywhere.

Stralsund

The Hanseatic city of Stralsund is home to. the beautiful Maritime Museum, which we gladly recommend to all our guests. There is also the possibility to buy a combination ticket for the Meeresmuseum and the Ozeaneum to buy, whereby you can visit both aquariums cheaply. The Ozeaneum contains besides the aquarium also stories about the Baltic Sea, fishing and some rare exhibits, such as a very large whale skeleton. There are also beautiful churches and an old town, as well as the Ratskeller, where you can eat food with your hands. In addition, the Hansedom is a good swimming - and adventure pool with sauna area, slides and a weight room.

Greifswald

The Hanseatic city of Greifswald is also called a University city called. This is based on the fact that the city of Greifswald has the second oldest university, which also enjoys a fairly good reputation. As in every Hanseatic city, there is a port, here to the, named after the city, Greifswalder Bodden. In earlier times, the Hanseatic cities were highly respected, however, today is not much to see of it anymore. No one would think that these cities were as highly regarded as Hamburg or had a trade -and war float.

Schwerin

The capital of Mecklenburg Vorpommern is Schwerin. Special attention is paid here to the beautiful castle, which includes year-round art exhibitions. Another special feature is the Schwerin Zoo, which was expanded from a landscape zoo to a species conservation zoo in 2016. To learn more, visit the zoo's page http://www.zoo-schwerin.de/

The isle of Rügen

The biggest island of germany is Rügen. this isle extends on 986 square kilometers the northernmost county of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. For most travelers it is not the geographic size to always come back, character and beauty by itself is giving the charm.

The Landscapes

Hardly any other island in Germany has to offer visitors such a diverse and varied landscape: Südrügen with its flat landscape, its magical light and the green avenues.
The pristine northwest, the unique chalk cliffs on the Jasmund peninsula; the vibrant life of miles of beaches in the fashionable seaside resorts to the east and the far out to sea border headlands on the peninsula Mönchgut ...

The northernmost tip of the island of Rügen is the Cape Arkona.

The vastness of the sea, bluffs and steep gorges of the high coast of Rügen have produced coastal landscape and vegetation. The monument area " Cape Arkona " with its two lighthouses, one built by K.F. Schinkel in 1827, and the old, newly restored Peilturm at the Slavic fortress is unique in Germany. Visit the special celebrations at Cape Arkona, such as the solstice celebration, New Year's Eve fireworks or in the summer months, art and cultural events.

During your trip to Cape Arkona a visit at the fishing village of Vitt should not be missed. This place with its small chapel creates a feeling of an idyll, that you can rarely find it these days. Ancient house signs still bear witness to the earthiness and the self-confidence of the villagers.

The entire village is a protected monument. In the small port of Vitt boat trips around Cape Arkona are offered. Collect unforgettable impressions. At the Cape, two lighthouses, a navigation tower, two military bunker, the Slavic Jaromarsburg and some tourist buildings (restaurants, bars, souvenir shops) are located. On one of the beautiest and largest natural stage of Europe in Ralswiek, directly at the big Jasmunder Bodden, the yearly legendary Störtebeker-Festival is taking place.

Usedom Landscpae

Usedoms is an island with a diversified landscape whose unique character is strongly influenced by forests, hills and tranquil lakes. The north of Usedom and the historic town Peenemünde can best be symbolized with peace or serenity.

The museums on Usedom

Two museums in Usedom we can highly recommend. One of these is the Air Force Museum in Peenemunde, the old test site for rocket technology and war equipment manufacturing. Another museum is very close to the Air Force Museum. It is the Experimenta, a museum of art, intellect and optical illusion, to join in and touch. In the Experimenta you can experience how hard it is to raise a horsepower or perform other small experiments.

Enjoy the sunset on the west beach and let yourself and your partner from this outstanding Baltic romance impress.

The Gold of the Baltic Sea

Prayer cords of the Mohammedans are made of it, and Luther used a piece of "Börnstein" to cure his stone disease. No wonder then, if a little after sunrise bath guests are concentrated at Fishlands outer coast and stooped running indulging a strange sport: looking for amber splinters. Sought are stones with inclusions: 40 million years ago enclosed by the resin little beetles or plant parts. They are rarer than commonly assumed, and locals know that Northeast storm is needed to bring more amber chunks to light between seaweed. A little hint: The stone is distinguished from others well because he is easily electrically when rubbed on woolen clothes. And a small consolation: Who does not find it, can at least admire the "Baltic gold" in the Amber Museum in Ribnitz-Damgarten.

Grand Voyage to overseas

1819 wrote a Swedish captain: "Darßer are as sailors ... highly sought because you can certainly find no better ..."

During the heyday of local shipping in the 19th century, two professions were found: sailors and shipbuilders.
Their brigs, barques and full-rigged ships ventured as far as overseas. Barth and Zingst were at times home to more ships than Stralsund or Greifswald.
The advent of the steamships, the "Stinkbüdels" or "Füerfräters", brought the end of own shipping.
One hired in the large shipping companies in Rostock, Stralsund and Kiel.
Today, magnificent seamen's graves in the Zingst cemetery, the captain's houses there, the charming seamen's village of Born or the Wustrow Seafaring School founded in 1846 are reminders of the old sailing days.
